Extracurricular Activities

St. Benedict School is well known for offering a full range of extracurricular activities for students. The principal makes the final determination of activities offered each year. We recognize that athletics and extracurricular activities are important parts of the educational experience. Every student has a right to tryout for sports and activities and to be evaluated fairly. While as many students as possible will be allowed to participate in extracurricular activities, including athletics, students must meet eligibility requirements.

  School Spirit/Spectators

School children are encouraged to attend the games and cheer their team to victory. We ask that students be accompanied by an adult or guardian to the game. Those attending the games are asked to stay within the immediate location where the game is being played and not to roam the area or building.

School Activities
Students are encouraged to participate in activities to enrich their academic program.  Offered for the 11-12 school year are: Art Contests, Creative Writing Contests, Art Show, 8th Grade Play, Altar Servers, Sports Programs, Science Club, Book Club, Student Council, Technology/Spanish Club, Letter B, etc.

Special Programs
  • String Instrument Lessons – Grades 2 – 8
  • Band – ½ hr. weekly small groups lessons and weekly full band rehearsals for Grades 3 – 8. Lesson times rotate each week so that academic time does not suffer.
  • Chorus—Primary (during school time) & Advanced (meets before school)
Eligibility
Extracurricular activities are a privilege earned by good students. The guidelines for proper academic department needed to participate in these activities are included in the code of conduct. If a commitment is made for a certain activity, it should be followed through. Cooperation, responsibility, and accountability are important in participating in activities. If there is an academic or behavior problem, continuing in an activity will be discussed with the student and parents. It is important also that discretion be used in the number of activities in which a student is involved and the amount of time, especially if it interferes with the student’s academic achievement and responsibilities.

Student Responsibilities
Students must fulfill their responsibilities to be eligible to play on a school sponsored sports team.  All decisions regarding the student eligibility may be made at the discretion of the administration. The coaches will be given a copy of ineligible students. Students must:

  • Receive a passing grade in each subject area in the preceding marking period.
  • Be on time and ready to work everyday by 8:20. Students may not be eligible to participate if tardy more than 5 times in a marking period.
  • Exhibit proper and respectful behavior in and out of school and maintain no less than a 3 in conduct. Any athlete serving detention on the day of the practice, game, or event does not participate that day.
  • Attend all practices unless previously excused by the coach.
  • Be present in school for at least half of the school day in order to participate in either a game or practice.
  • Maintain and return uniforms, equipment, etc. at the end of the season.
